Minimalist styling for your apartment

Updated: May 20, 2021

A guide to nailing that minimalistic style - letting your space's natural elements shine…

Characterised by austerity and strictness, minimalist design and styling is all about letting the space speak for itself with little to no additions or interruption. Often the goal of this type of design and space is to create a calming, clutter-free environment, attempting to draw us back to basics… Oh, but with details… the glorious and carefully selected details.

The steps to mastering minimalist house decor start with your vision and not your individual furniture piece, so it’s a case of knowing what your space needs to be before purchasing anything.

The essentials.

COLOURS

Choose a neutral colour palette; popular choices include whites, creams, and pops of pastel. Most minimalist homes feature white walls because white will never go out of style and offers a great base for those pops of colour.

TEXTURES

You might feel that not being able to experiment with colours could get a little bland and boring, but this is where the beauty and power of textures comes into play. When considering items to include in your decor, embrace the different textures of your pieces and play them off the other key elements of your space, such as lighting and the different finishes of surfaces in your living and dining. For example, pair leather with wood or thick fabrics with concrete. Once you’ve decked out your space with key pieces and you are looking to add more (RESIST, remember this is minimalist after all), always consider the existing textures and how the ones you plan to bring in will compliment them.

FLOW

Blend living and kitchen seamlessly with other rooms of the house to make the apartment feel like one flowing, and enlarged space - this symmetry between different rooms is a key factor when we look at stand out minimalist styling.

LIGHTING

Embrace the natural light in your apartment and use it to your styling advantage playing with shades and tones.
